Common Questions About Text Neck

  • posted: May 20, 2022

Text neck is a relatively new term used to describe the pain and discomfort associated with looking down at your phone or other electronic devices for extended periods. If you're experiencing pain in your neck, shoulders, or back, you may be suffering from text neck. At Ries Wellness, we provide quality care for a variety of health conditions, including text neck.

What Causes Text Neck?

There are a few things that can cause text neck. The first is looking down at your phone or other electronic devices for long periods. This puts strain on your neck and can lead to pain and discomfort. Additionally, poor posture can contribute to text neck. If you're not sitting or standing up straight or your head is jutting forward, you're putting yourself at higher risk of developing text neck.

How Do I Prevent Text Neck?

With text neck, the symptoms begin with moderate aches in the upper region of your back and your neck. There are a few easy tips to implement to reduce your discomfort:

  • Limit the time you're spending on an electronic device, if possible.

  • Ensure you're viewing a screen at eye level, and avoid looking down at your phone or tablet.

  • Use appropriate stretches

What Are Some Stretches To Use for Text Neck?

  • Chin retraction - Gently tilt your chin toward the ceiling and then back to a neutral position.

  • Shoulder blade squeeze - Bring your shoulder blades together and hold for 10 seconds.

  • Neck stretch - Move your right ear toward your right shoulder, and hold for 15 seconds. Repeat on the left side.

  • Prone retraction - Lie on your stomach with a pillow under your forehead. Gently bring your chin toward the ceiling, and hold for 10 seconds.
